A few notes on JL Rowing Gear intended to help guide your purchases. Since this gear can be pretty expensive gear, this may help understand what you are getting so you feel like you are getting what you are expecting. Most of this gear is meant to be rowed in or to be used at a regatta, but it's been well tested by lots of members of the team generally really quality gear that is specifically made to support the nuances of rowing. Some notes on JL Gear for your consideration:
You need to have at a minimum at team shirt, tank top OR unisuit for racing (you must wear one of the 3 for racing). Those are the following items:
Any of the unisuits
Loose Fit Short Sleeve (#105042 or women’s cut equivalent)
Tank top (item #105049 or #105048)
These are the jackets that everyone wants! They are water resistant, but not water proof and are comfortable to row in and have a water bottle pocket that comes in really handy. There are 2 varieties - one with a fleece lining that is a little bit warmer, and one with a mesh lining. I have both and use both. When I wear the fleece lined one, I usually take it off after the warm up and most of us do the same thing… wear it for the warm up but take it off for the workout or race. The mesh lined one can usualy be worn longer in cooler weather.
There are 2 types of shirts offered. The ones with the black or yellow sleeves are meant to be form fitting. Some people prefer that, but just know that is how they are meant to fit. They can be great as base layers in colder weather. If you prefer something looser fit, the yellow ones with the white and black on the sides are looser fit. Those are our “official” racing shirt.
This is the official hat/visor that our rowers need for racing. Our crews are acutally supposed to match (part of the rules of rowing), so if you’re going to wear a hat for racing, these are the ones that you are supposed to wear. They also help spectators pick us out on the course.
You do not have to buy JL Trou, but they are great for racing. The slightly padded seat is really nice. They are comfortable for racing and hold up really well. I do recommend them. The leggings are not my favorite.
The rain jacket is extremely expensive, but is a really good piece of rain gear. It is great for rainy regatta weather but is NOT meant to be rowed in. if you are looking for a great rain jacket, it is really good, but there are probably really good options that are less expensive. The parka is relatively new and I have personally not tested it. It's meant to help keep rowers from getting chilled in cooler weather situations. Similar to the rain gear, NOT meant to be rowed in and is pretty expensive.
I really like the Active Sun Hoodie. It is long sleeve performance fabric that is really comfortable. Might not be for everyone, but I like mine. The vests are a personal choice. Some people love vests, and some do not. I find them to be a great layer in cooler weather.
