Each January, we offer rowers the opportunity to challenge themselves and do a marathon, half marathon or distance row. Junior and Mentor Rowers are required to do one of the three as part of their training. Recreational rowers can choose if they would like to participate and waht they woud like to do. Beginner rowers will do a group distance row. You can see the top finishers for our team throughout the years on this page.
I have some information and a few tips to prepare for your marathon and half marathon.
If you are doing a marathon or half marathon, you may want to eat either nothing, or eat something light before you row. I don’t recommend a full meal, or anything heavy or greasy.
You WILL want to eat after, but it will probably take 30-60 minutes after you are done to really be hungry. Parents, just warning you that your rower may want something after they row!
Don’t forget to bring any snacks or drinks that you might want during or immediately after the marathon or half marathon. I don’t normally recommend Gatorade or other electrolyte drinks, but having something for during or right after you row is not a bad idea. It’s also not a terrible idea of have some kind of snack, but make sure it’s something that you’re pretty sure will sit well. Things that work well are bananas or other fruit or granola bars.
We usually put something on the TV in back, BUT you are more than welcome to bring your own entertainment. I suggest headphones and we do have some phone holders for the ergs that people can use. PLEASE DOWNLOAD ANY MOVIES. I also recommend downloading any music, podcasts or other entertainment. If everyone is streaming, your entertainment may glitch, which could be an issue!
Marathon rowers arrive at 8a and get all set up, pick your erg and your spot in back, stretch, etc. then get started.
Marathons take 3.5 to 4.5 hours. Your rower can call you when they are done and ready to be picked up.
Half marathon rowers arrive at 8:45a with the goal of starting 9a. If you feel you need more time to prep, you can arrive earlier. The goal is to start rowing by 9a because that’s when the beginners arrive and will be starting their distance rows in the front room.
Half marathons take around 2-3 hours. Like the marathons, rowers can call you when they are done and ready to be picked uip
Teigan and Scott will be doing a distance rows, and all of the Beginners attending (Lily, Jameson, Blaise) will be doing a group distance row. Any other rec rowers that may be attending can either jump in on the group distance row, or do their own distance row.
