We are looking at making some adjustments to the Juniors Team requirements with a couple of goals in mind:
Continue to require enough workouts and in person rowing to ensure that rowers are building fitness and technique required to be more competitive.
Place more emphasis on times of the year that will be more impactful in terms of meeting goal #1, while balancing that by backing off at times of year that we feel won’t make as big an impact in order to give rowers and families a much needed break and an opportunity to focus on other things.
With those two goals in mind, I would like to try the following requirements and I would appreciate feedback on whether or not there is enough flexibility built into these requirements to work for your situation with other activities, work, etc.
Because of the shift in requirements, the pricing for the Juniors will be going down. I will be working on the pricing model ASAP.
However, I will also be adding two optional programs in November, December and January that will cost something extra that Juniors and Mentor Rowers can add to their training. I do not have pricing on these yet but these are completely optional to participate in:
There may be 2 separate weight training programs, or just one long one. We have seen gains from weight training in our older rowers, so this program will be targeted at upperclassmen that are not already doing an intensive weight training program in school.
Underclassmen and 8th graders can also participate, but their program will be slightly different than that of the upperclassmen.
This program will likely be 4 days per week for 1 to 1.5 hours and will also meet the Juniors Team Workout Requirements (you won’t have to double up on workouts). Mentor team, this will also meet your workout requirements, but will not meet the requirement to mentor the Beginner Team. I will try to find a way to dovetail those requirements if I can (for example, the weight training time might be before a beginner team workout so you can just stay).
Please let me know if this is something you might be interested in.
This program is geared toward rowers that may be looking to drop their 2k for personal reasons, or because they are looking to increase their chances during the recruiting process. This program will consist of additional rowing and cardio training and additional 2k testing over a period of time.
To be clear, if rowers participate in the winter program as it is, they should improve their 2k time over the course of the 2.5 months, however, this program is designed to provide results beyond what that 2.5 month program can provide.
At this point, I do not think that a rower can do both the Advanced 2k Training and the Weight Training programs at the same time.
Please let me know if this is something you might be interested in.
Below is an overview of the proposed requirements for the Juniors team. Because this is a work in progress, i am willing to work with everyone to see how this goes, but I would love everyone’s honest feedback about how these requirements work for you.
The Mentor Team has multiple functions for the rowers that participate.
They have the opportunity to row up and be mentored by more experienced rowers, but they also have the opportunity to take leadership roles and mentor less experienced rowers.
The Mentor Team also serves as a try out for the Juniors Team. If Mentor rowers successfully complete the requirements and show improvement in their technical skills as well as their fitness, they have the opportunity to be promoted to the Juniors Team.
The Mentor Team is also an opportunity for rower to decide if they can meet Juniors Team requirements and see if the Juniors Team is right for them. The requirements for the Mentor Team are somewhat flexible, but must be met within reason in order to advance to the Juniors Team.
If at any time the Mentor Team becomes too much for a rower, they can elect to back down to the Recreational Team.
The following are the proposed requirements for the Mentor Team. There is some flexibility with these requirements as the Mentor Team is supposed to be an opportunity for rowers to figure out how being on the Juniors Team may work for them.
To give you an idea of what practice options are available, below is the tentative schedule for each month. We are trying to offer enough practices that everyone can meet their requirements.
